Best Practices for Dog Whelping: A Guide for New Dog Owners.

Welcoming a litter of adorable puppies into the world is an exciting and rewarding experience. However, it’s essential to be well-prepared and knowledgeable about the best practices for handling dog whelping to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and her puppies. Here are some tips and tools to have on hand for a smooth whelping process:

  1. Essential Tools:
  • Whelping box: Provide a safe and comfortable space for the mother to give birth and care for her puppies.
  • Clean towels and blankets: Use these to keep the puppies warm and dry after birth.
  • Thermometer: Monitor the mother’s temperature to predict when she is close to giving birth.
  • Dental floss or clamps: Use these to tie off and cut the umbilical cords.
  • Aspirator or bulb syringe: Clear the puppies’ airways of any fluids after birth.
  1. Handling Umbilical Cords:
  • It’s crucial to handle the umbilical cords with care to prevent infection and ensure the puppies receive proper nourishment.
  • Use clean scissors to cut the cords about an inch away from the puppy’s belly.
  • Tie off the cords with dental floss or clamps to prevent bleeding.
  • Keep the area clean and monitor for any signs of infection.
  1. Ensuring Proper Aspiration:
  • After cutting the umbilical cords, use an aspirator or bulb syringe to gently suction any fluids from the puppies’ airways.
  • Position the puppy with its head slightly lower than its body to allow gravity to help clear the airways.
  • Gently pat the puppy’s back to encourage coughing and breathing. What I call working on a puppy, Rubbing a puppy gently with a towel to promote a vigorous response. A puppy can be worked on and revived up to 45 minutes after birth. By rubbing the puppy it helps keep them warm and can stimulate the puppy to start taking their first breaths. Make sure to aspirate along the way with working on the puppy.
  1. Using Gravity to Your Advantage:
  • Holding the puppy upside down for a few seconds while aspirating can help clear any remaining fluids from its airways.
  • Support the puppy’s body securely while allowing its head to hang down.
  • Be gentle and cautious when handling the puppies to avoid causing any harm.

By following these best practices and having the right tools on hand, you can ensure a safe and successful whelping process for your dog and her puppies. Remember to stay calm, be prepared, and seek help from a veterinarian if you have any concerns during the whelping process.
